Kent County Health Department Services

Learn more about lead poisoning prevention and the resources available to Kent County residents.

To qualify, you must be a Kent County resident and:

  • at least one member of the household is pregnant OR
  • at least one member of the household is under the age of 6.

Case Management

Case management is available to families who have a child with a lead level at or above the CDC’s reference level, which is currently 3.5 μg/dL. The case manager can assist with coordinating testing with your child’s doctor and complete developmental assessments.

As a part of case management, a public health nurse can complete up to 6 home visits, which includes information about:

  • Signs and symptoms of lead poisoning
  • Foods that help with reducing lead levels
  • Safe cleaning methods
  • Reducing risks and exposures to lead
  • Lead testing recommendations
  • Available resources

Lead Poisoning Prevention Nurse Visit

  • One time home visit for families looking for more information on lead
  • Education about lead safe cleaning, testing recommendations, potential sources of lead exposure and more
  • Information about available resources to help prevent lead exposure

Ready By 5 Home Health Screening

A FREE home inspection to help find health hazards in your home, including hazards related to lead, asthma, and safety. Information on how to get rid of health risks in your home and prevent future exposures. If hazards are found, additional inspections are available to help identify the cause. Connection with resources to help reduce or eliminate the cost of any necessary repairs.

HEPA Vacuum

A regular vacuum will spread lead dust into the air you breathe. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter vacuums contain filters that trap small lead particles. A vacuum that captures particulates of 0.3 microns with 99.97% efficiency is needed to capture lead dust. Kent County Health Department has a vacuum available to borrow for your home.

Education and Outreach

The Kent County Health Department is committed to providing education about lead to county residents. KCHD attends events and provides information about our lead program directly to the community. KCHD offers information and provides presentations for groups interested in learning more about lead.
