Kent County Parks Volunteer Update!

Due to the recent weather and ground conditions, we have rescheduled the Kaufman Golf Course Clean from March 18 to March 25. Although volunteers who have registered for this event have been contacted, we wanted to notify all volunteers of the revised details along with some of our other spring event dates!

Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 10 am to 1 pm
L.E. Kaufman Golf Course Spring Clean Up and Grill Out! Join a team of volunteers to “clean the greens”!  Where: L. E. Kaufman Golf Course; 4807 Clyde Park Ave; Wyoming, MI To register: Contact park.volunteers@kentcountymi.gov or 616-632-7842 Note: All supplies and tools will be available on site and a hot dog grill out lunch at the golf course lodge will be provided by Kaufman Golf Course staff.

Kent County Parks Annual Park and Trail Spring Clean: Help give the parks a fresh spring clean-up! Raking, trimming, trash pick-up, landscape support, Garlic Mustard pulls and trail cleans at various Kent County Park sites. Great for volunteers of all ages!  See below for scheduled event dates or plan your own group or individual service day! Pick a time! Choose a park site! Plan a project!

April 1, 2017 from 10 am to noon
Millennium Park Spring Clean!  Volunteers will be helping with spring clean up on trails and around the landscaped areas to get the park ready for opening on May 1! To register, contact park.volunteers@kentcountymi.gov.

April 15, 2017 from 10 am to noon
Garlic Mustard Challenge! Join a team of “pullers” to help protect the natural habitats at Millennium Park!  Volunteers will be pulling and bagging the invasive species, Garlic Mustard at various sites around Millennium Park. To register: park.volunteers@kentcountymi.gov.

Wednesday, April 19, 2017 from 7:30 – 8:30 am
You are invited to the Kent County Parks Foundation “Parks Matter!” breakfast at the Salvation Army Kroc Center! Get up to date information on exciting projects that are on the horizon to expand and enhance our County Parks! Breakfast is complimentary, but we will gratefully accept your financial support of our mission to inspire the community to invest in open spaces, parks and trails. Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 1 to 3 pm
Kent County Parks will be hosting an information table at the Blandford Nature Center’s Earth Day Celebration which includes the Grand Opening of the Mary Jane Dockeray Visitor Center and will include the Grand Rapids Conservation Collective Open House. Tour the new visitor center and learn more about region wide volunteer opportunities and upcoming projects that will positively impact the environment in West Michigan. Blandford Nature Center is located at 1715 Hiillburn Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI.

Saturday, April 29 and Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 9 am to 3 pm
North Country Trail Building at Seidman Park!  Learn about trail building while supporting a new North Country Trail section! Orientation begins at 9 am and project is led by North Country Trail Association members. For more information or to register for this event, contact park.volunteers@kentcountymi.gov.

Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“Discover!” Millennium Park’s Hansen Nature Trail Event (located on the corner of Butterworth Dr and Riverbend Rd) Volunteer help is needed for this free and fun discovery event for all ages! Visitors will take a walk on the “wild side” while visiting nature activity stations and going on a nature scavenger hunt! See wildlife up close! Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 10 am to noon
Celebrate National Trails Day by joining a team of volunteers to plant Native Species along a new trail section near the North Country Trail at Townsend Park! Great for groups, individuals and families! Have fun while making a difference!  To register, contact park.volunteers@kentcountymi.gov or 616-632-7842.

Other Special Projects:

  •  “Steward” a favorite Kent County Park or Trail (2017 season)
  • Help identify, map and catalog Invasive Species and Native Species at high priority Kent County Park sites
  • “Bee” part of a Pollinator Support project!
