What does WIC Provide?

Supplemental Foods

Foods for Infants (Birth-12 Months)

The WIC Program strongly encourages and provides support for breastfeeding.

Infants who are fully breastfed past 6 months of age will receive pureed jarred baby fruits, vegetables, and meats.

The fully breastfed infant receives nearly three times the amount of baby foods as infants receiving formula.

Iron-fortified infant formula is available for the first year of life for babies who are not fully breastfed. Infants may also receive some infant cereal and jarred baby fruits and vegetables starting at six months of age. Fruit juice is no longer part of the benefits package for babies as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) concluded that juice offers no advantage over whole fruits for infants over six months of age.

Infants and children with specific medical diagnoses may receive a special formula with their pediatrician’s signature and proof of need. Standard prescriptions will not be accepted for special formula requests. See links below for a copy of the required instructions & form.

Foods for Women & Children

Pregnant and postpartum women and children (under 5 years of age) participating in WIC receive food benefits for milk, cheese, eggs, cereals, peanut butter or dried or canned beans or peas, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread or tortillas, and fruit or vegetable juices. Women who exclusively breastfeed their babies may also receive extra food, including canned tuna fish and salmon.

Detailed listing of standard maximum food benefits for each category below:
  • Women (Pregnant or Partially Breastfeeding Mothers, Breastfeeding Exclusively or Mothers Pregnant with Multiples, Non-Lactating Mothers)
  • Infants (Exclusively Breastfed Infants, Partially Breastfed Infants, Formula Fed Infants)
