To ensure that all people of Kent County have access to safe, affordable and nutritious food.


  • The Kent County Department of Human Services finished 2012 with 48,567 Food Assistance Program (food stamp) cases,  down 7.1% from 2011.

  • The USDA Commodities Program/ACSET distributed 861,084 pounds of food at Senior Pantry, TEFAP, and CSFP Programs and 799,352 additional pounds to other agencies and pantries. Overall distribution decreased 16.6%.

  • Feeding America of West Michigan distributed 6,842,688 pounds in Kent County in 2012, down slightly from 2011.

  • Access Pantry Network’s 2012 distribution totaled 85,190 household food services, up 7% from 2011.

2012-2013 Accomplishments

  • Elected a volunteer Board of Directors to support F&NC operations.

  • Updated and reprioritized the FNC Strategic Plan with new measures and target dates.

  • Coordinated the FNC strategic plan with similar goals and objectives to the Kent County Health Department’s Community Health Needs Assessment.

  • Created a toolbox of access support resources for food assistance and support services.

  • Collaborated with the Michigan Farmers Market Association /Fair Food Network - Double Up Food Bucks to promote low income nutrition options.

2013-2014 Agenda

  • Publish the toolbox for food assistance and support services.

  • Continue community wide food handling safety education.

  • Continue supporting MDHS MiBridges on-line benefit application expansion.

  • Continue developing food system collaboration with Kent County Health Needs Assessment, Community Transformation Grant, Heartside Nutrition strategy, Michigan.

  • Farmers Market Association /Fair Food Network - Double Up Food Bucks, Alliance to Stop Hunger, GVSU- Growing Food Connections Sustainability Initiative and Community Food Club Project.
