Employee Recognition For Quality Service

2nd Quarter 2014 - Recognized Employee

Scott Dobbins, with the Health Department’s Animal Shelter is recognized as the Kent County Quality Service Employee of the 2nd Quarter for helping to fulfill Kent County’s mission by providing quality service to citizens of Kent County.

The individual who nominated Scott wrote:

“On and afternoon in May, my friend posted on Facebook that her three year old son had been attacked by two large dogs and bitten by one.  A friend stepped in to prevent further harm to the child.  The owner of the dogs called them inside and locked the door and did not respond when the police knocked.  This was of great concern because of the risk of rabies, particularly because the little boy was born with a heart abnormality.  He had already received multiple corrective surgeries and had a weakened immune system.  The mother describes the experience:

“This is an awful day. My son was attacked by a pair of German Shepherds on our way home from the walking pool.  He was bit on his right shoulder.  He is fine, but we don't know if the dog(s) that bit him have rabies.  The hospital says it is painful to treat for rabies.  I don't know how he will react with his heart condition.  The police say they cannot seize the dogs from the property where my son was attacked because the owner put the dogs into the house and appears to have fled. Treatment for rabies is time sensitive.  I am sick and angry and sad for my boy.  I wish there was a way to get the dogs without waiting for their coward owners...’

I commented to my friend’s Facebook post that she should call the Kent County Animal Shelter. She commented back immediately to say an animal control officer had already responded:

“Animal Control was amazing.  They came on the heels of the fire department and the police. Officer "Scott" was very reassuring and calm and professional.  I felt taken care of and glad that they were super speedy in an awful situation.  Experiences like this and my previous exposure from multiple emergency needs has shown me that GR cares for its community.  You can post a SHOUT OUT of THANKS AND BLESSINGS to the staff at Kent County Animal Control, our Community Police Officer Jeremy and the guys at Fire Department, too.’

The friend who stepped in to save the child had this to add:

“Scott was so kind and told us to call him day or night.  We were kind of dazed and he really went above and beyond to make sure we were ok."

Scott Dobbins was instrumental in bringing comfort and confidence to this family in a traumatic event which happened to have followed a litany of medical emergencies for their son.  My friend went from frightened to grateful in a short period of time largely because of Scott’s empathy and professionalism. No doubt, this caliber of service occurs many times a day from our Animal Shelter staff.  Scott is an excellent example of the kind of public servant we all aspire to be.”

Number of Years Employed by Kent County:  5 years and 11 months.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done:  Is to be a father. I have a 14 year old son and a 6 month old son and they both teach me new things every day. It amazes me sometimes how fast they grow but it's a joy to watch.

Three people (living or dead) I’d invite to dinner:  My parents, Jeff and Milissa Byrd because without them I wouldn't be the man that I am today. The other person would be my beautiful wife and best friend Elizabeth Dobbins.

You’d be surprised to learn that:  I love the Detroit Lions.

The thing that I like most about working for Kent County is:  My wonderful coworkers throughout the County. I love that I am able to serve the county as well as the City of Grand Rapids. I was born and raised here and there is no other place I would rather be.

Please join us in congratulating Scott Dobbins for earning Kent County’s Employee Recognition for Quality Service Award.

If you know a Kent County employee who is deserving of this recognition, please complete a nomination form at www.accesskent.com/qualityservice or on the Kent County intranet.
