"Recently my family experienced a horrible tragedy where Detective Jim Svoboda was the responding detective. During this event, Detective Svoboda treated my family and I with respect and dignity in our time of what turned out to be the worst possible nightmare for our family. Detective Svoboda was kind and took time to talk to us and help us understand what had happened to us. He was prompt to return our calls and offered help when we needed him. It may be a routine thing for him to act that way in these types of situations, but the way he helped us through that awful day and the days following was very helpful in the healing of our family. I was looking for answers as to why this tragedy occurred and he helped to shed some light on the situation through his investigation that followed.
Detective Svoboda demonstrated honesty and compassion for the feelings of my family. He had a tough job to do that day and he did it with respect and honor to our family. I wanted to call and thank him until I found this webpage, so I would appreciate it if this message could get through to him. I would not want to ever go through this ordeal again and this is something he and his fellow officers have to deal with time and time again. This type of tragedy is something that you can never get used to, but to be able to show the kind of compassion he did for us that day helped me through those first few days. I don't know where I would be right now if I had someone else respond to that call. I want to thank the Sheriff's Office for all they did that day. I hope you can give everyone that responded to our call some sort of recognition or at least a thank you from our family - for helping us to transition through this life changing tragedy."
Number of Years Employed by Kent County: 12 years 11 months.
The hardest thing I've ever done: Attending my father's funeral when I was 15 years old.
Three people (living or dead) I'd invite to dinner: My father, Lou Holtz (former Notre Dame football coach) and Harry Houdini (magician).
You'd be surprised to learn that: I have been married to my beautiful wife Lisa for 13 years and we have three children together.
The thing that I like most about working for Kent County is: I think that the Sheriff's Office has a great group of people to work with. Not only are they good co-workers, but they are also good friends outside of work.
Please join us in congratulating Detective Svoboda for earning Kent County's Employee Recognition for Quality Service Award.
