The infant mortality rate is commonly accepted as a measure of the general health and well-being of a community. It is used to compare populations both within and across geographies (i.e. cities, counties, states) and is an important component in the identification of health disparities. Differences in infant mortality rates among population groups may indicate unequal access to quality healthcare before (preconception care), during (prenatal care) and between (interconception care) pregnancies. Infant mortality can also reflect the adequacy of health services and social support available in a community to enable children to reach their full potential.
