As a recipient of federal funds, the County of Kent is required to document efforts to “affirmatively further fair housing” in its jurisdiction. This means that Kent County will “conduct an analysis of impediments to fair housing choice within the jurisdiction, take appropriate actions to overcome the effects of any impediments identified through that analysis, and maintain records reflecting that analysis and actions in this regards.” The 2011 Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice provides data collection and analysis regarding impediments and strategies to address these impediments.

2011 ANALYSIS OF IMPEDIMENTS TO FAIR HOUSING

What is fair housing?

Fair housing choice means that all persons regardless of race, color, religion, sex, disability, family status or national origin have equal access to housing opportunities.

Federal, state and local laws guarantee protection against discrimination in housing accommodation, giving all persons, without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin/ancestry, disability, genetic information, height, weight, arrest record, or familial status, the right to live wherever they can afford to buy a home or rent an apartment. In the City of Kentwood, Wyoming, and Grand Rapids, additional local ordinances do not permit a landlord to discriminate based on “verifiable and legal” source of income of a renter or owner.

If you believe you have been a victim of housing discrimination, you can contact the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan at (616) 451-2980 or 1-866-389-FAIR to file a complaint.
