Local Restaurants Awarded by Kent County Health Department
(Grand Rapids, MI) – The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) has awarded 125 local restaurants with the 2006 Public Health Food Safety Award. This represents an 18 percent increase in the number of awards when compared to 2005.
In an effort to commend those restaurants and restaurant owners who displayed exemplary practices in the areas of sanitation and the preparation/handling of food, the Health Department created the Public Health Food Safety Awards in 2004.
“It takes a tremendous amount of hard work to run a safe food service operation. These owners and their staffs should be recognized for their efforts. We want County residents to know that these establishments have met some pretty rigorous guidelines and are safe places to dine,” said Cathy Raevsky, Kent County Health Department’s Administrative Health Officer.
Each of Kent County’s 1,978 restaurants is inspected twice a year by one of Kent County Health Department’s ten food sanitarians. Food sanitarians are charged with enforcing regulations set forth in Michigan’s 2000 Food Code which was revised on October 16, 2007. Health Department sanitarians provide restaurant owners/operators with a wide variety of services including: plan reviews, inspections, and complaint investigations. The food sanitation program is the largest program of the Environmental Health Division at KCHD.
A list of the award winning restaurants along with restaurant inspections results from all Kent County restaurants are posted on the Health Department’s website at www.accesskent.com/health.
