Local Restaurants Awarded by Kent County Health Department

(Grand Rapids, MI) – The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) has awarded 224 local restaurants with the 2004 Food Service Sanitation Awards.

The Health Department created the Food Service Sanitation Awards in an effort to commend those restaurants and restaurant owners who displayed exemplary practices in the areas of sanitation and the preparation and handling of food. KCHD recognizes the challenges restaurants face while striving to abide by necessary, but often complicated regulations. Currently, there are hundreds of regulations contained in the 2000 Food Code which restaurants must comply with in order to protect the health of their customers and stay in operation.

“We are very pleased to present these owners with the Food Service Sanitation Awards. They have demonstrated a high level of proficiency and consistency in their sanitation practices and they should be recognized for it. It takes a tremendous amount of hard work. We hope they display their certificates proudly for all their customers to see,” said Cathy Raevsky, Kent County Health Department’s Administrative Health Officer.

Each of Kent County’s 1,569 restaurants is inspected twice a year by the Kent County Health Department. Inspection results for the award winners indicated no more than a total of two critical violations during 2004. Critical violations are those closely associated with causing food borne illness.

Noto’s Old World Italian Dining, located at 6600 - 28th Street, is one of the restaurants who will receive a 2004 Food Service Sanitation Award from the Health Department. Health Department staff will present Noto’s with their certificate on Friday, June 10 at 2:00 pm. Staff from both the Health Department and Noto’s will provide additional information regarding the awards. The media is encouraged to attend.

Restaurant inspections results from all Kent County restaurants are posted on the county’s website, www.accesskent.com. A list of the award winning restaurants can be found here.
