Kent CMH Offers Free Anxiety Disorder Screenings

Anxiety disorders strike more than 19 million Americans every year - making them the most common form of mental illness in America. On Wednesday, May 2, Kent County Community Mental Health (CMH) will join Freedom From Fear, the National mental Health Association, and many other local and national organizations throughout America to educate the public about anxiety disorders and offer confidential screenings free of charge.

Fear and anxiety are a normal part of everyday life," says Richard Evans, Kent CMH Director of Community Relations. "Events such as starting a new job, taking a big test or driving in poor weather conditions can induce some level of anxiety and fear in anyone. But when these feelings become overwhelming, it may mean a person is experiencing an anxiety disorder."

Symptoms of anxiety disorders vary widely. The most common include excessive worry or fear, panic attacks, heart palpitations, obsessive or ritualistic behaviors, phobias, sleep difficulties and poor concentration. Left untreated, these disorders can dramatically reduce productivity, diminish quality of life and even lead to suicide. Fortunately, anxiety disorders are treatable.
