Purpose

Addressing utility emergencies, weatherization, conservation and education.

Facts

  • In 2005, 11,957 were assisted, 19,025 were helped in 2006 – an increase of 59%.
  • Senior household assistance increased 52%.
  • Households above 125% of poverty increased 50% since 2003.
  • Electric assistance cases almost doubled each year since 2004.
  • Weatherization funding dropped $200,000, leaving a waiting list of over 50 cases.

2006-2007 Accomplishments

  • Better utility companies bill payment coordination yielded fewer shut-offs.
  • More and better weatherization/conservation classes made requiring emergency payment recipients to attend a reality.
  • The Grand Rapids Water Authority now provides $116,000 per year for overdue water bills.
  • The Subcommittee and Coalition to Keep Michigan Warm provided testimony at public hearings in Kent County.
  • Expanded advocacy and education with local media on fundraisers like Walk-for-Warmth and The Heat and Warmth funds.

2007-2008 Agenda

  • Strengthen Kent County’s utility assistance collaborative management structure.
  • Continue working with the Coalition to Keep Michigan Warm to stabilize utility funding.
  • Further streamline the assistance process with collaboration on common applications and better electronic communication.
  • Expand utility conservation resources with local and state officials through increased funding and policy changes.
  • Advocate for and institutionalize full year utility assistance funding, rather than ending on June 30.
