Kent Trails Construction Update

*Updated: 10-2-2009*
Kent Trails' new pavement is now complete. ADA Detectable Warning Strips are currently being installed at all street crossings. These areas are roped off with caution tape and orange construction barrels. When the caution tape and barrels are removed, the crossings will be safe for use. Parking is still unavailable at 84th street. We are in the process of creating additional parking spaces and making the area more user friendly.

Please respect the “trail closed” and “construction” signs when they are in place.

Updates (as needed) will be posted by 5 p.m. every Friday as reconstruction continues.

Kent Trails is a 15 mile, non-motorized trail that is the result of a collaborative planning effort between the Kent County Parks Department, the cities of Grand Rapids, Grandville, Walker, Wyoming and Byron Township.

Traveling through these six governmental jurisdictions, the trail follows abandoned railroad line, surface streets and easements, to provide linear parkway in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area.

There are 5 main access points to the trail. These points are located at Johnson Park, John Ball Park, Douglas Walker Park, Millennium Park and in Byron Center at 84th Street. Parking areas are located at these points. The trail can also be accessed at any cross street along the route.

This paved pathway is handicap accessible. Since most of the trail follows abandoned railroad lines, the trail is predominantly level with no sharp turns. If you're a beginner at roller blading or cross country skiing, this is a great place to start.
