Seasonal Events

Disc Golf

Johnson Park and Brewer Park have disc golf courses. The courses are open during park hours and there is no fee to play. The tees are marked with yardage and par. Disc golf is continually increasing in popularity.

Meyers Lake Swimming areaSwimming

The Kent County Parks Department boasts four swimming beaches. Myers Lake, Long Lake, Millennium and Wabasis Lake Parks all have sandy beaches and bath houses. Swimming is great exercise and a fun way to stay cool during a hot summer day!

Geocaching

Geocaching (pronounced “geocashing”) is a family-friendly activity that uses a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) unit to locate a “cache” hidden somewhere within the Kent County Parks. (More information)

Skyhoundz Local ChampionshipSkyhoundz Local Championship

This mini distance contest is cosponsored by Skyhoundz and Kent County Parks. Year 2009's event will be held on Friday, May 29th, at Dwight Lydell Park. The park is located on West River Drive in Comstock Park.

You may register your dog by contacting the Kent County Parks Department at (616) 336-PARK, 8am-4pm, Monday through Friday, or at the park the day of the event. Registration and Check-In will run from 5:00 pm through 5:45 pm. The competition will start at 6:00 pm. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Novice and Crowd Pleaser. Spectators are welcome! A schedule of events managed by Skyhoundz through their website at www.skyhoundz.com.

Hiking

Hiking in the ParksThere are several parks you can walk through and enjoy the fall colors and fresh air. The trails through Kent Trails, Lamoreaux Park, Palmer Park , Pickerel Lake Fred Meijer Nature Preserve, Seidman Park, Townsend Park and Wabasis Lake Park are especially ideal for hiking and viewing fall colors. Rogue River is now a staging area for the White Pine Trail State Park. The entrance is located off Belmont Road.

Cross Country Skiing

Cross country skiing is a great way to see the outdoors. Groomed trails can be found at:

Snow covered tree in Douglas Walker ParkThe trails in these parks range from 2 miles to 15 miles. The difficulty level is from beginner to expert.

Sledding

Sledding is fun for all ages. What really makes it fun is finding a great hill. Good quality sledding hills can be found at Johnson Park, Caledonia Park and Wabasis Lake Park. None of these hills are lit at night and close at dark.
