Mission Statement

The Sheriff of Kent County and the Correctional Facility staff are dedicated to the safety and security of the community. The operations of this facility will be governed by the applicable State and Federal laws while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and service to the community.

JailResponsible inmate behavior will be encouraged by providing fair, impartial and humane treatment for all inmates. The safety and well being of all those incarcerated will be an ongoing objective.

The employees of this facility will be provided with the training, support and supervision necessary to keep a safe and professional environment.

The Correctional Facility is a system of facilities that house the inmates committed to the custody of the Sheriff. The system primarily includes the Main Jail, the Work Release building, and the Honor Camp. In addition to these, the jail always has a small number of inmates out on Writs that are temporarily lodged in other jails or prisons.

The population of the jail system continues to see steady growth. The number of inmates coming into the jail climbed to over 31,000 this year for the first time. The average length of stay for an inmate in our jail is fifteen days. The average daily population or census of all the inmates in the Sheriff's custody in 2004 was 1,302. The Kent County Correctional Facility ranks in the top 100 largest jails in the nation.

Our primary goal is to run a secure facility and one that is safe for both inmates and staff. Toward that end, we changed the inmate classification system in 1997 and it continues to be a valuable tool for reducing unwanted inmate behavior. In fact, 2005 continued the trend in reduced inmate rule violations, something that is a key indicator of inmate behavior.

DayroomThe main jail employs both the linear and podular housing designs to accommodate approximately 1,094 inmates of all security classifications. The facility is programmed for internal security to consist of a combination of direct and indirect supervision. The podular housing units are designed into two level sections of cells around a dayroom where inmate activities take place.

We are one of the few facilities in the country to have three state-of the-art integrated computer systems working simultaneously. We employ a Jail Management System which ties in with our live scan Identix fingerprint and Video Mugshot systems.
