D.A.R.E - Drug Abuse Resistance Education

D.A.R.E. DenaliThe Kent County Sheriff Department is proud to offer D.A.R.E. to more than 3,000 students every year around the county. This program remains the most recognized and respected anti-drug and violence program offered to our young people. This is an excellent way for a uniformed officer to be proactive and interact in a positive way with students. Like any other information and skills a student learns, he or she must decide to make good choices. Our hope is that as a community, parents, teachers, peers, friends and family alike, we are presenting a common and similar message that will stay with students into their adult life.

The Kent County Commissioners and Sheriff Lawrence Stelma continue their support for the program. We maintain two full-time deputy positions and one deputy cross-trained in Community Policing/D.A.R.E. Deputies Trevino and McCutcheon received D.A.R.E. Officer training for Junior High level education in hopes to offer 7th grade D.A.R.E. in the future.

Over the past several years D.A.R.E. America requested a study be done to determine the program’s effectiveness. The University of Akron-Ohio conducted a scientific based study, and found the program to be successful. It was recommended to D.A.R.E. America that information and presentation updates be made. From this study it was also recommended that the program be taught as a minimum standard in 3rd, 5th and 7th grades. Our department is looking for ways to meet this challenge to enable us to include a 7th grade program.

*The Sheriff Department Narcotics Team has confiscated numerous vehicles from drug dealers. Two Drug Forfeiture Vehicles have been converted to “DARE Vehicles”: a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2002 GMC Denali. Seized drug money was used to purchase necessary police equipment for those vehicles. (Pictured on this web site)
