Transfer / Court Security
Comprised of twenty-seven deputies, one sergeant, and one lieutenant, the KCSD Court Security & Transfer Unit is responsible for the production at court of all in-custody inmates within Kent County. The officers serve not only 17th Circuit Court and 63rd. District Courts Cascade and Rockford, but handle in-custody defendants and witnesses for preliminary examinations in 61st. District Grand Rapids, 62 A & B Wyoming and Kentwood, and 59th. G & W Grandville and Walker. In 2006, 10,459 in-custody subjects were transferred to court appearances and 14,010 non-custody subjects were supervised at court appearances by the deputies.

In addition, the deputies’ daily duties include drug testing ordered by the 17th. Circuit Court Family Division, DNA tests, PPO hearings and escorts, duress alarm response, and LEIN requests.
The Transfer deputies transported 1440 persons to state prisons, mental health facilities, youth correctional institutions and county jails throughout the state in 2006. They were also directly responsible for six of the 81 extraditions of defendants wanted by the State of Michigan or other states. Medical, dental, and psychological appointments for in-custody persons are also facilitated by the Court Security & Transfer deputies. Last year, 556 in-custody persons, including juveniles, were transported for medical, dental, or psychological appointments.
Assisting the Court Security & transfer deputies are a group of 30 part-time retired law enforcement and corrections officers in the Security Enforcement Officer Unit. These officers provide building security for the Kent County Courthouse, 63rd. District Courts, 82 Ionia NW, and Juvenile Detention Center. Last year these officers were responsible for screening over 1,027,431 persons entering the KCCH, 63rd. District Court in Cascade and 82 Ionia. And they confiscated over 7378 bladed weapons from those attempting to enter the courthouses, Juvenile Detention or 82 Ionia NW.
