How do I File For A Divorce?

You need to file a summons and a complaint for divorce with our office. There are several Michigan do-your-own divorce books available at bookstores on how to do this. There is a $150 filing fee.

It is important to remember that we are not attorneys, and are prohibited by law from giving legal advice.

How do I get case information from the court?

First, you need the defendant's full name and date of birth (if a criminal matter). If you have the case number, we can look it up and give you the information – either over the phone, in person, or by using the Court Name Search in the Online Services section of the accessKent website. If you do not have the case number, there is a $5 search fee.

How do I get bond money back?

Call the criminal division at 632-5457. All questions pertaining to bonds, fines and costs for restitution should be made to this number or see Bond Returns.

How much does it cost to file a lawsuit?

It costs $150 with an additional $85 due if you want a jury trial.

Do I have to have a lawyer?

No. No one is required to have a lawyer. If you choose to represent yourself, you need to know the court procedures. This means you have to understand court rules and procedures as well as procedural requirements.

How much does it cost to obtain a copy of a judgment of divorce?

You can get a copy directly from our office for $7. A certified copy costs $15.

When is the Domestic Relations fee due?

The fee is due only at the time of filing the final judgment and thereafter for postjudgment motions requesting a change in support ($40.00), custody ($80.00) or parenting time ($80.00). This fee does not include the motion fee ($20.00) also required at the time of filing the postjudgment motion.
